|
In recent years rises in costs of land and building materials and a diminution in buying power of families have led to severe problems in the housing market in Emilia Romagna. This situation, combined with a liberalisation of rent policies, means that young people are finding it increasingly hard to enter the property market. The lack of affordable housing for young couples led the Adria Co-op. to propose the construction of low-cost single family homes. In order to keep the cost down, the basic habitable house would be provided by the builder, with any further alterations to be carried out by the owners. A typical house consists of a low-roofed unit including garage and cellar, a glass-covered space between house and services and in the main part of the house a big living room, a kitchen, a cupboard and a bathroom. The scheme has been extremely successful, and was nominated for the UN’s World Habitat Award in 2003. |
