This report contains the most updated housing statistics of the 25 European Union member countries and is a follow up to the work carried out by the Ministries of Sweden and the Czech Republic and the countries that drafted the previous nine reports. The report gives a complete overview of the socio-economic conditions and housing policies in the different European countries as well as of the resources devoted to the housing sector. However, it is not only a statistical document - the appendices contain a useful glossary of the main terms referring to housing and the socio-economic contexts.

This is the 10th edition of the publication and the first one to cover detailed information on housing conditions in all 25 EU countries. The data presented has been forwarded by the different national administrations dealing with housing policy. Statistics include four main categories; General data, Quality of the housing stock, Availability of dwellings, Affordability of housing and a new category The role of the Government which includes data and qualitative descriptions on Government policies.

The report provides unique data and in-depth analysis covering a combined market of 460 million people. This year's report covers the 10 EU accession countries for the first time, with in-depth chapters on Hungary and Poland and an overview of the remaining eight. At the link above you will have access to the full report (in English) as well as to a summary in the following languages: English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian and Spanish.

Statistics available in both PDF and Excel format. Statistical indicators on Population and households, Dwelling stock, New dwellings, Value of construction and Building materials. The data covers Europe, USA and Canada and most indicators are available for 2001 or 2002.

A good coverage of data related to both housing and construction. Indicators are divided in to seven categories including; Population and Households, Dwelling stock, New Dwellings, Construction of non-residential buildings, Value of Construction, Building firms, Building materials, Prices, costs and rents.

Several online publications. Example of publication related to research on social housing: Statistical pocketbook on Living conditions in Europe 2003, which includes data from 1998-2002. Free access to several databases. Key indicators on EU Policy that includes Long term, short term and structural indicators (predefined tables). The Database by themes or subthemes is also free of charge now and can be downloaded in several formats. Various time series data interesting for comparative studies in the field of social housing, including for example rents, housing consumption expenditure and rooms per person.

Some On line publications and occasional papers. Good databases; “Data  On Line”, which includes six main databases. Examples of databases with statistics related to social housing: Human Settlements database, data on housing and building, the Demographic database that includes data on age distributions, population projections and the Trends in Europe and North America database.

Coverage: “World wide coverage”

Several online publications, such as the Statisticzl yearbook including data for over 250 countries. Many free databases, and some with restricted access. Free access to data on  Demographic and Social Statistics, including various statistics on population, migration and public spending. A good site map which gives on overview of the available statistics.

Worldbank

Language: English, Spanish, French, Russian, etc.

Coverage: 184 World Bank members and 24 other economies

Limited free access to data bases. Free access to some World Development Indicators with data on for example population and land use. Other sources include migration and macroeconomic indicators.

ECB - European Central Bank

Coverage: focused on the Euroarea

Key indicators are updated every month and include Monetary developments and interest rates, Prices, output, demand and labour markets, Balance of payments, reserve assets and exchange rates. Other statistics include data such as HICP and prices, macroeconomic and labour market  indicators.

OECD Statistics Portal

Language: English, French

Coverage: 30 member countries, but also good international data

Databases by topic include comparative statistics. Examples of indicators related to social housing are Demography and migration and Social policy statistics, that includes public spending on housing.

Urban Audit, European Commission

Language: English

Coverage: 58 cities in Europe

A database of indicators reflecting aspects of urban life. The housing domain includes indicators of floor area and percentage of households that are social housing tenants.
