In the light of the very “underprivileged social status” of this social housing area, SIDR had to design a made-to-measure plan for the renovation of the Vauban buildings group. Tenants and shop owners were invited to take part to the choices related to the improvements and alterations planned. The rehabilitation process also involved the creation of a social support unit specifically assigned to provide individual counselling and support to each family, and the establishment of financial support tailored to individual needs. The statistics show that after the project completion crime and delinquency in the area have dropped dramatically.
From the point of view of energy efficiency, the buildings were provided with thermal comfort features (according to the ECODOM label criteria), anti-noise devices, and solar-powered hot water production, leading to significant gas and electricity savings and reduction of greenhouse gas emission.
