CECODHAS European Social Housing Observatory highlights wider role of social housing organisations in fostering sustainable communities at the European Social Housing Forum (EHF) seminar in Dublin. The event, which took place on the 18th of April in Dublin (Ireland), was organised by the EHF with the aim of stressing the key role played by housing in building sustainable communities.
Amongst the speakers were representatives of a wide range of housing-related European networks and associations. On behalf of the CECODHAS Observatory, Jouko Heino (Director of Research and Development, VVO-PLC, Finland) gave a presentation on the wider role of social housing providers in fostering sustainable communities. The talk was based on findings from a pioneering pan-European study on the management of social rental housing conducted by the CECODHAS Observatory in conjunction with VVO-PLC.
The presentation discussed the policy and practice implications for the delivery of sustainable communities from social housing providers' perspectives. The study involved interviews with CEOs and housing managers from social housing organisations from amongst CECODHAS members in 6 member states. Amongst the main issues raised was the leading role played by many social housing providers across Europe in community development activities at neighbourhood level, alongside the added value of social enterprise and social real estate approaches to their activity. The final report will be presented at the General Assembly meeting in Vienna on the 31st of May and the resulting publication will be launched at the next colloquium on “The future of social housing in Europe” to be held by the CECODHAS Observatory in Barcelona on the 20th of September.
