The European Commission unveils its integrated proposal for Climate Action Print E-mail

08-02-08

On January 23rd, Jose Manuel Barroso presented to the European Parliament the new climate change package, after it was adopted by the Commission. The package includes a detailed description on how the European Union will meet sustainable development goals and objectives while tackling climate change and delivering secure, sustainable and competitive energy to EU citizens.

The Climate Action package should be considered as a consequence of the European Union Spring Council 2007 and of the United Nations Climate Change Conference hold in Bali last December 2007.  On both the occasions, energy efficiency measures and use of renewables were identified as key issues in combating climate change.

With regard to energy efficiency, the social housing sector should play an important role in the realization of the EU targets; according to the Commission’s opinion, energy efficiency, to be achieved through the implementation of National Energy Efficiency Action Plans, is one of the cheapest ways of cutting greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to sustainability and security of supply.
