After the European Culture Capitals, the European Commission following the suggestion of mayors of many European cities decided to launch an initiative to promote and reward the efforts of cities to improve the quality of the environment and the quality of life of the citizens. Starting in 2010, one European city will be selected each year as the European Green Capital of the year.
The selection criteria set up by the European Commission are :
• Local contribution to global climate change (where data is available)
• Local transport
• Availability of green areas open to the public
• Quality of local ambient air
• Noise pollution
• Waste production and management
• Water consumption
• Waste water treatment
• Environmental management of the local authority
• Sustainable land use
All European cities that comply with the eligibility criteria may apply to become the European Green Capital by filling in the online application form by the deadline on 1 October 2008.

Alongside this award, the EU Member States are planning to launch a reflection on the creation of European label on sustainable and solidary cities. This discussion should take place mainly during the Forum of Cities on 2 and 3 December in Montpellier (France). CECODHAS wishes to take part to the discussion so as to make sure that any label will duly reflect the efforts made by cities and housing providers to provide housing to the highest environmental standards through new construction, refurbishment, but also initiatives to change residents’ behaviour.
