In January 2009, European regions and cities were invited to present projects in supporting creativity and innovation at local level. A total of 80 proposals from 16 countries were received. One of them, the “Barrio Avanzado-Advanced District” is a project for the creation of a district characterised by a high share of social housing, ready to be installed in the city of Toledo, Spain. The plan won the day in Bruxelles, where it was elected one of the six best innovative local practices in the forum on “Europe’s Creative Regions and Cities”, held on April 20th and 21st, in the context of the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.
This project, designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, will be probably recognized in the future as a social and cultural icon for this city, as it promotes innovative services and the idea of building a new and modern neighbourhood . According to the recently published summary of the project, it is estimate that the “Barrio Avanzado” will permit the construction of 2.000 new social dwellings (Viviendas de Proteccion Oficial, or VPOs), more than 53.000m² of land designed for public resources, about 50.000m² appointed to become green areas, while about 7.500m² will be developed into a significant source of jobs, especially for young people, as they will be converted into offices.
