Solidarity between Generations: European Day and related initiatives Print E-mail

The first European Day of Solidarity between Generations took place on the 29th of April.
All across the European Union, conferences and other events were organised around the theme of intergenerational solidarity. CECODHAS was partner in an awareness-raising campaign launched by the European Older People's Platform (AGE) together with other NGOs, which contributed to the success of the European Day by encouraging the organisation of intergenerational activities at grass root level as well as policy debates at local, national and EU level.

To support the campaign, AGE published the booklet ‘Meeting the challenge of demographic ageing in the context of the current crisis: A plea for greater intergenerational solidarity’. Solidarity between generations in housing figures among the key issues included in the booklet, which presents some good practices such as the ‘kangaroo housing’ in Belgium, or housing for students and seniors in France and Spain. Intergenerational housing is also the focus of the video 'Jumping the generation gap', which presents the example of Plaza de America in Alicante, a project carried out by Patronato Municipal de la Vivienda de Alicante, a member of AVS.

>Both the video and the booklet can be found on AGE website at: http://www.age-platform.org/
On the occasion of the European Day, the European Commission carried out a Flash Eurobarometer survey on the views of EU citizens on intergenerational solidarity.

On the same day (29 April), the European Commission adopted a policy communication on dealing with the impact of an ageing population in the EU. The Commission Communication takes an in-depth look at the economic and budgetary impact of an ageing population over the long-term until 2060.
