All buildings will have to comply with high energy-saving standards and be powered to a large extent by renewable energy after 31 December 2020. Public authorities will lead the way by owning and renting buildings with such "nearly zero" energy standards by the end of 2018. Part of the funding for these changes will come from the EU. These are among the key points of a deal reached between Parliament and Council negotiators. The compromise text has been formally approved by the Council on 7th December 2009.
Next steps: The European Parliament should give its final endorsement at the beginning of 2010. Once adopted and published in the EU Official Journal, Member States will have two years to bring their national laws into line with the new directive.

Furthermore, as a part of the ASIEPI project funded by the Community’s Intelligent Energy Europe programme, the results of a survey on the impact of EPBD on national approaches of 12 Member States regarding regulations, compliance and control on energy performance requirements and certification systems are now available.
