Together with job creation and the availability and quality of health services, access to reasonably priced housing is a major concern for European urban dwellers, reveals a ‘Perception survey on quality of life in European cities’, published by the European Commission on 5 May.
In Paris and Rome 96% and 88% of respondents, respectively, claim that it is difficult to find affordable housing. This pessimism extends, in a smaller proportion, to over two-thirds of the cities covered by the survey.
The survey was carried out to measure local perceptions in 75 cities in the EU, Croatia and Turkey. It included all capital cities of the countries concerned. In each city, 500 randomly selected citizens were interviewed. In total, more than 37,500 interviews were conducted between 30 October and 10 November 2009. Two previous surveys were carried out in 2004 and 2006.
